The Great Death-Conquering Mantra
One of my favourite mantras - and probably amongst the most well-known and powerful ones - is the Mahāmrtyuñjaya Mantra, the Great Death-Conquering Mantra.
It is traditionally chanted in times of hardship, illness or death to ease these transitions and the pain sometimes associated with them by drawing attention to that which is beyond death: immortality, attained through awakening and liberation.
“We meditate on the Three-eyed reality
Which permeates and nourishes all like a fragrance.
May we be liberated from death for the sake of immortality,
Even as the cucumber is cut from clinging to the creeper.”
Oṃ tryaṃbakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam
urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā'mṛtāt
